Prime Minister Manmohan Singh might not have won even single election in his life, but he was never out of political reckoning courtesy his bosses in the Congress Party. Since 1991, he has been a regular in the Rajya Sabha and this time would be no different as the party has again nominated him as candidate from Assam’s capital city, Guwahati. Interestingly, his land lady Hemo Prabha Saikia may join him too in the upperhouse of the Parliament.
After successfully trying his hands at the bureaucracy, when Prime Minister Manmohan Singh tried to make his way into the political arena, he was faced with a fundamental problem-where to file his Rajya Sabha nomination from? Though, he never lived in Guwahati, the Narsimha Rao Government gave him a ticket a from Assam’s capital. His other problem of finding an address, where he would be shown to be living, was solved by the then chief minister Hiteshwar Saikia.
Manmohan, soon, become Sekia’s tenant, on paper though. His official address at his website still reads House No 3989, Nandan Nagar, Ward No 51, Sarumataria, Dispur, Guwahati- a house that belongs to Hemo Prabha Saikia, wife of former chief minister Hiteshwar Saikia.
With Saikia’s name surfacing in the list of probable candidates and CM Tarun Gogoi backing her, it is likely that she might share space in the Rajya Sabha with his tenant. The prime minister, who is underfire from the opposition in the Coalgate scam, would definetly not mind little moral support from her handlady if she makes it to the Rajya Sabha.
