2016 F1 season set to witness new qualifying format

London, Feb.24 (ANI): The 2016 Formula One season is set to feature a new qualifying format after the FIA proposal was unanimously accepted in order to increase the amount of action during qualifying.

In addition to the new format, improved cockpit protection will be introduced in 2017 after a high-pressure meeting between the F1 Strategy Group and the F1 Commission was held in Switzerland on Wednesday.

The new qualifying format will see the slowest drivers eliminated every 90 seconds after a timed period, the Guardian reported.

It is likely to be introduced for the first race of the season in Melbourne on March 20.

Also, the FIA announced a ‘Driver of the Day’ award which will be voted for by fans. (ANI)
