80 charged in massive child porn probe

Toronto, April, 29 (CINEWS): Over 270 charges have been laid by the Ontario Provincial Police for alleged production, possession and distribution of child pornography against 80 people across the province.

The OPP said in a news release that the accused were “download candidates” for suspected child pornography, and that the probe showed that the user had visited a child exploitation website. “These 2000 IP addresses were observed over the last 90 days in Ontario.” The arrests were of people from Windsor to North Bay and were from “all walks of life,” Det. Sgt. Frank Goldschmidt, the co-ordinator of the provincial strategy against online child exploitation said in Toronto.

The charges also included sexual assault. The arrests occurred across the province, from Windsor to North Bay, and the accused come from told a news conference in Toronto on Thursday. Some 20 victims were rescued and sent for counselling and they included nine minors “14, 15, and 16-year-olds.”

Lianna McDonald, executive director of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, sai “This is an important day for children in Canada.”

She said an average of 4,000 reports of suspected child abuse and online exploitation were received each month by the national child protection center. Eighty per cent of child porn images on the web were of children under the age of 12, and most of the victims are girls, she said.
