Aasia Bibi in Canada after acquittal on blasphemy charges

After spending eight excruciating years on death row, Christian woman Aasia Bibi was acquitted of blasphemy and is finally in Canada where she has joined her daughters.

Aasia Bibi was convicted of blasphemy in 2009 after a quarrel with a fellow farm worker. The Supreme Court overturned her conviction last year, and she had been in protective custody since then.

Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law, which carries an automatic death penalty has often been misused to settle political scores or disputes involving property.

A three-judge Supreme Court panel in January cleared Bibi’s final legal hurdle when they ruled there was no compelling reason to overturn the court’s earlier acquittal. Meanwhile her location and arrival in Canada is shrouded in secrecy given the possible threats to her life. -CINEWS
