The Nisichawaysihk Cree Nation has announced that an Addition to Reserve of land at Mystery Lake Hotel Complex, Manitoba, is now complete.
The Addition to Reserve will create an urban reserve of 1.702 hectares (4.21 acres) within the City of Thompson, Manitoba. It will also advance economic development opportunities, including employment for First Nation members, allow for greater First Nation autonomy, and demonstrates First Nation and Municipal collaboration through a Municipal Services Agreement.
Carolyn Bennett, Minister of Indigenous and Northern Affairs, on Friday congratulated the Nisichawaysihk Cree Nation for the addition.
Adding to reserves is one method in which First Nations and the Government of Canada are working in partnership to build healthier, more sustainable communities through encouraging economic development opportunities.
Bennett said: “Additions to reserve are important opportunities to increase economic development and create jobs within communities. Today’s announcement will allow Nisichiwayasihk Cree Nation to move forward in the creation of an urban reserve at the Mystery Lake Hotel Complex. It also reaffirms the Government of Canada’s commitment to renew the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples in working in partnership with First Nations, Inuit and Métis to build healthier, stronger and sustainable communities coast to coast to coast.”
Chief Marcel Moody, Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation, said: “This is a big step on the path towards a better future for our First Nation. Although the process has taken over a decade – much longer than expected – the Additions to Reserve Land means we can make plans for the property and confidently find ways to improve economic development opportunities.”
