It’s not often that we hear of an Indian actor playing the lead in a Hollywood film. Ali Fazal has achieved that rare honour by playing the main role along with academy award winning actress Dame Judi Dench in ‘Victoria and Abdul’.
The film is being directed by Stephen Frears. The screenplay is by Academy Award Winner Lee Hall who has written films like Billy Elliot.
The film which is based on Shrabani Basu’s book Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closet Confidant. tells the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship during the later years of Queen Victoria’s rule with an Indian clerk, Abdul in her court.
When Abdul Karim, a young clerk, travels from India to participate in the Queen’s Golden Jubilee, he is surprised to find favour with the Queen herself.
As the Queen questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance with a loyalty to one another which her household and inner circle are trying to destroy. As the friendship deepens, the Queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes and joyfully reclaims her humanity.
Ali Fazal was born in Lucknow. He made his screen debut with a small role in the English language film The Other End of the Line (2008) before appearing in the American television miniseries Bollywood Hero (2009).
Fazal made his Bollywood debut with a special appearance in 3 Idiots and he next appeared in Always Kabhi Kabhi. His first success came in Fukrey and was seen in a supporting roles in films; Baat Ban Gayi, Bobby Jasoos and Sonali Cable. He played the leading role in the horror Khamoshiyan followed by his first American film Furious 7. – CINEWS
