Annie Raja takes on Akhilesh Govt. over Barabanki woman burning incident

New Delhi, July 7 (ANI): National Federation of Indian Women general secretary Annie Raja on Tuesday said that the Akhilesh Yadav-led Uttar Pradesh Government should file a criminal case against the two policemen who allegedly set a woman ablaze in the state’s Barabanki District, and added that the state administration has failed to prevent such crimes.

“The lady went to the police station to enquire why her husband had been detained by the police and was pleading with them to set him free. But in return, they not only demanded a bribe for his release, and also set her on fire. That shows how the Uttar Pradesh police behaves with people who happen to be inside the police station, whether it is a man or a woman. And now, the Akhilesh Government will have to take a very firm position. Not just suspension, but file a criminal case against these people so that such incidents do not happen in the future,” Raja told ANI here.

“Although it is a very shocking incident, it is nothing new in Uttar Pradesh. This has happened before and it only goes on to show that the Uttar Pradesh administration is a failure at preventing such crimes. It is sad that these incidents continue to happen without any action from the government,” she added.

The husband of the woman has rejected reports that she had self-immolated herself.

The victim’s son had earlier demanded justice for his mother, saying she would only rest in peace when the guilty are punished.

Meanwhile, the victim’s colleague said she remembered the anganwadi worker as an honest and hard working woman. (ANI)
