London, July 12 (ANI): England bowlers came up with a splendid bowling performance to guide their team to an emphatic 169 runs victory over Australia on the final day of the first Ashes Test in Cardiff.
Australia, who were the clear favourites going into the series, bundled out for 242 while chasing a mammoth target set by the hosts, the BBC reported.
Chasing an unlikely target of 412, Australia were never in the hunt and to their ill-luck, lost four wickets for nine runs in 35 balls either side of lunch and were eventually bowled out.
Stuart Broad and Moeen Ali bagged three wickets each, with the former inspiring his side, scalping the top three Australian batsman.
Mitchell Johnson, however, did delay the victory for the English side, scoring 77 runs to keep the visitor’s hope alive.
But Man of the Match Joe Root showed his golden touch with the ball, taking two of the last three wickets, including that of Johnson.
With only five days to go for the second Test in Lords, Australia have very little time to recover and it would be very interesting to see how Michael Clarke’s side will turn up at the ‘Mecca’ of cricket. (ANI)
