Asian oncologists share expertise on cancer

New Delhi, April 8 (IANS) Doctors from across the globe on Friday shared expertise in cancer treatment, so as to lower the incidence of the disease in the Asian region that accounts for 60 percent of all cancers.

Apart from new cancer research on in Asian countries, the doctors will talk about new devices for cancer treatment during their three-day Asian Clinical Oncology Society (ACOS) conference.

Doctors from 38 countries are participating in the event, being held in India for the first time.

“This is a blessing for Indian oncologists. Asia accounts for 60 percent of all types of cancers. In the conference, we will learn on how and what new treatment we have for cancers across the world,” said K.S. Gopinath, chairman of the conference committee.

As per the National Cancer Registry Programme date from the India Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the estimated mortality rate due to cancer saw around six percent increase between 2012 and 2014.

Yi Long Wu, president of Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, told IANS: “Whatever advancement we (China) have in cancer research will be shared with other Asian countries. We are discussing the way to curb lung cancer in our country, which is extremely high in China.”
