August bombings: Thailand detains first suspect

Bangkok, Sep 5 (IANS) Police have detained the first suspect in connection with the attacks that hit central and southern Thailand in August, police said Monday.

The suspect was identified as Abdulkadir Saleah, 33, from the province of Pattani, who was wanted over an arson attack on a three-storey building in Trang province on August 12, Efe news reported.

Abdulkadir is being held at the Ingkhayuttha Borihan military base and under a special order issued by Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha can be detained for up to seven days for interrogation without a warrant.

The police believe that at least 20 terrorists, including 10 foreigners, were involved in placing and detonating the 14 bombs that killed four people.

Most of the alleged terrorists do not have a police record and are from southern Thailand, where Muslim separatist groups operate, according to national police chief Chakthip Chaijinda.

The authorities have claimed that the bombings were politically motivated, despite forensic evidence that pointed towards the involvement of Muslim separatists from the southern part of the country.
