Bhismotsav 2016, featuring Naseeruddin Shah, raises funds for palliative care

bhishmotsavCanSupport, a pioneer in the field of palliative care in India , staged five short plays written by Bhisham Sahni, acclaimed Hindi playwright and fiction writer at the NCUI Auditorium & Convention Centre, Andrews Ganj, New Delhi recently.

All funds raised from the event are to CanSupport’s free home-based palliative care service for terminally-ill cancer patients.

The plays are directed by Seema Bhargava Pahwa and staged by the illustrious cast of Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah, Seema Bhargava Pahwa, Manoj Pahwa, Heeba Shah, Mayank Pahwa, Rakesh Chaturvedi, Vinay Sharma, and Manukriti Pahwa.

The event was supported by G4S, a leading security solutions group in the country. Founded by Harmala Gupta, a cancer survivor, CanSupport is a not-for-profit registered society that has since 1996 delivered palliative care, free of charge, to thousands of people battling cancer in Delhi and its neighbourhood. Its pioneering home care service, delivered by a team of professionals trained in palliative care, is recognized worldwide and has brought much-needed medical, nursing and emotional support to the doorstep of people battling with the advanced cancer. Currently there are 25 home care teams reaching beneficiaries homes in Delhi and NCR. They provide home-based care to 1,850 patients battling advanced cancer at any point in time. Majority of the patients are from economically weaker sections of the society.

CanSupport also has a telephone helpline, a day care, peer support groups and counseling services. It is at the forefront of training medical professionals, nurses, counselors and caregivers in Delhi and North India. Besides the Annual Foundation Course in Palliative Care, it runs certificate courses in palliative medicine, nursing and counseling.
