BJP protests over non-payment of salaries to MCD workers

New Delhi, Jan. 30 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday staged a protest in the Laxmi Nagar area of the national capital over non-payment of salaries of New Delhi Municipal Corporation workers.

The BJP said that its activists plan to march from Nirman Vihar to the Delhi Secretariat to protest against the non-payment of salaries to MCD workers.

Over 1.5 lakh MCD employees, including sanitation workers and other employees of the three municipal corporations – NDMC, SDMC and EDMC – have decided to go on a three-day strike from today over non-payment of dues.

The cash-strapped North and East Delhi civic bodies have been unable to pay salaries to the workers for three to four months now.

Delhi’s Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia urged the MCD to rise above the ‘politics of garbage’ and pay the workers their salaries.

“It is a ‘politics of garbage’ I would like to request the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and all the three mayor’s of BJP to pay the money to the workers,” Sisodia told the media here.

“The Delhi Government has paid all dues of the sanitation workers before time. It is the BJP which should answer where the money went. The BJP controls the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, having swept the election in 2012”, he added.

The striking MCD workers have upped the ante by threatening to hold demonstrations and pile up garbage across various zones. They have also threatened to hold protests outside the residence of Delhi ministers by burning their effigies and pile up garbage. (ANI)
