New Delhi, Feb. 15 (ANI): Criticising Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Yogi Adityanath for suggesting that Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) should be closed, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader AK Padmnabhan said that the saffron party is trying to target the progressive views expressed in varsity, adding that such attempts would be strongly opposed by the students.
“These people have been against progressive views. JNU has been a university where progressive views and Constitutional values are being upheld. They have been targeting that. This will be resisted as the professors, students and employees are all together and the whole country is protesting. Use of sedition charges against students shows where they are taking the country,” Padmnabhan told ANI here.
He also slammed Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh for saying that “JNU incident” was supported by Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed. He said that Singh should verify facts before making such statements.
BJP’s Gorakhpur MP, Adityanath, had yesterday reportedly said that JNU had become a blot on education and that it should be closed.
Meanwhile, Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who was arrested on charges of sedition for allegedly raising anti-India slogans, will be produced before a Delhi court today as his three-day police remand ends.
Kumar was arrested on Friday allegedly for raising anti-India slogans at an event organised by students on the JNU campus to commemorate the death of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru, who was executed in 2013.
He was sent to three-day police custody after the Delhi Police told the court that they wanted to probe his alleged links to ‘terrorist groups’. (ANI)
