Brampton has high diabetes rates, majority of residents are overweight: Report

There is a link between being overweight and the high incidence of diabetes. A report from Peel Region’s Medical Officer has made these statistics available to bring into focus the issue.

The report indicates that a whopping 62 per cent of Peel residents are either obese or overweight.

One in six Peel residents suffers from diabetes and only 15 per cent of adults in Canada and seven per cent of kids meet the minimum requirements for daily activity.

Dr Jessica Hopkins spoke with Brampton City Council about the importance of public transit in public health, and how a walkable, transit-friendly city in the context of better health for its residents.

A sedentary lifestyle in both work and play, and a lack of exercise is resulting in the high rates of diabetes among Brampton residents. -CINEWS
