It is going to get a bit more expensive getting around Brampton on public transit starting May 1.

The City of Brampton announced Presto fare will increase adult riders in Friday, as the city’s transit service looks to finance its expansion plans.

Starting May 12, an adult Presto e-Purse fare will increase from $3 to $3.10 per ride. Adult weekly passes will jump from $33 to $34, while monthly adult presto passes will increase from $124 to $128.

Only adult Presto fares will be affected by the change. Adult cash fare rates will also remain at current rates.

“Our priority is to provide a safe and reliable transit service. With our ridership growth, we’re focusing on adding more buses and frequencies to our routes to provide a better customer experience while using our service. This fare increase will help ensure that our riders have better options for their daily commute,” said Brampton Transit general manager Alex Milojevic in the release.

According to the city, the fare increase is estimated to generate additional revenues of $1.1 million this year as the city looks to add five new 60-foot and seven 40-foot buses to its fleet over 2019.

Brampton transit said the added buses would add an additional 81,000 service hours by the end of the year.

Meanwhile, city council is in the process of approving a big reduction in monthly senior Presto fares in its 2019 budget.

“Fare reductions are on the way for Brampton seniors. Brampton Transit is working to launch $15 monthly seniors’ passes towards the end of this year/early 2020,” added the city.

Council has also committed to making transit free for seniors before the end of the current council term in 2022, something Mayor Patrick Brown said he hopes to see happen as early as 2020.

Perhaps free transit for all could be a goal for 2030. If that happens there may be fewer cars on the road and consequently less need to spending hundreds of millions of dollars on road and highway expansion. -CINEWS
