New Delhi, Oct. 22 (ANI): President Pranab Mukherjee, Vice-President Hamid Ansari, former prime minister Manmohan Singh, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah witnessed the burning of effigy of demon king Ravana on the occasion of Dusshera at the Parade Ground here on Thursday.
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi and Union Minister Harsh Vardhan were also present on the occasion along with several other prominent people.
At a separate venue at the Red Fort , Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval watched the burning of Ravana and other effigies.
The effigies of Ravana’s son Meghnad and brother Kumbhkaran were set ablaze by firing a flame tipped arrow, thereby, marking the victory of goodness over evil.
The burning of giant effigies of Ravana, Meghanad and Kumbhkarana is the central feature of Dussehra celebrations.
According to the epic Ramayana, Ravana was slayed by lord Rama after a battle in Lanka after the former had held latter’s wife, Sita, captive. (ANI)
