London, July 21 (ANI): Burundian President Pierre Nkurunziza is standing for a third consecutive term in the elections that have been condemned by the opponents as unconstitutional.
According to BBC, the opposition said that the president can only stand for two terms.
Violent protests have emerged over the president’s bid in April followed by a failed coup in May.
Heavy gunfire and explosions could be heard in the capital Bujumbura hours before polls open.
The president’s office described the protests on Monday night as terrorist acts aimed at disrupting the election.
It remains unclear as to who was behind the protests. (ANI)
