The Union Minister on Wednesday slammed some “celebrities” who, she said, have made surrogacy “a fashion” and “shauq” (hobby).
There had been lot of frank discussions about surrogacy by Bollywood celebrities. Leading among them is Aamir Khan.
Without naming names, she said some celebrities who already have kids try to get another child through surrogacy as they “don’t want to put their wives in (labour) pain”.
“We have many examples of celebrities who have their own children, still they have gone for a surrogate child,” she said.
Shah Rukh and Gauri Khan, who had son Aryan and daughter Suhana together, opted for surrogacy at the time of their third child AbRam. Aamir Khan, who had son Junaid and daughter Ira with first wife Reena, used surrogacy for his third child Azad with second wife Kiran Rao. Actor Tusshar Kapoor also had a child through surrogacy and still a single father.
“I am pained to say that the procedure that started as a necessity, has become a hobby of sorts. This is not a thing for pleasure… it has become a fashion these days,” she said while addressing a press conference.
The Union Cabinet on Wednesday approved the Surrogacy (Regulation) Bill, 2016. Sushma Swaraj headed the Group of Ministers (GoM) formed to look into the issue of surrogacy.
Is the minister missing a point here? If you read between the lines of what the celebrities have said there is no problem in using a new and safe technology for their own advantage. Many people who are reluctant to reveal physical ailments they suffer from, opt for the surrogacy to avoid complications as the childbirth becomes more difficult as one ages. Many Bollywood women are putting off their marriage due to pressure they undergo to be successful in the highly competitive field. There will be a day they pause for a moment and think about the marriage and kids. What can they do in such a situation if you are in a risky age for childbirth? – CINEWS
