Championship held to promote Nagaland’s budding wrestlers

Dimapur (Nagaland), April. 3 (ANI): The Dimapur District Wrestling Association (DDWA) recently held a championship to encourage young wrestlers of Nagaland.

Zhaleo Rio, MLA of Nagaland, was the chief guest.

The inaugural encounter was between Vechita Khesoh and Vekuzo Vezhu, who were adjudged the champion and runner-up respectively at the recently held 25th meet of the Nagaland Wrestling Association.

“Our aim is to encourage youngsters to take the right path of practicing traditional Naga wrestling. We are not only promoting young talent, but we are doing this to promote peace and tranquility in the society. We hope to get Nagaland Wrestling Association’s recognition and look forward to organize it on national level,” said Vekhosayi Nyekha, President DDWA.

At least 54 Naga wrestlers from different districts participated in the event.

It was a tough match between 29-year-old Dziesalatuo Keretsu and 24-year-old Dojolhu Shijoh.

Standing tall at 5’11”, Keretsu, weighing 105 kgs, overpowered Shijoh, 5’6” tall and weighing 80 kgs to emerge victory.

The winner was conferred a prize money of Rs 60,000, while the runner up received Rs 50,000, apart from certificates.

“I am 61 year old and I am still associated with Nagaland Wrestling and I was the first wrestler in Nagaland wrestling team,” said a Former Wrestler.

“I thank DDWA for giving this opportunity to be here to meet the people. It’s been a very amazing journey. So far I have participated in 6 tournaments and have won 4 championships,” said Dziesalatuo Keretsu, Wrestler.

Every alternate year, such competitions are held to promote young wrestlers in the state. (ANI)
