Chennai Port can now handle bigger container ships

Chennai, May 31 (IANS) After becoming the deepest amongst major ports in the country, Chennai Port can now handle large sized ships, said a top official.

Speaking to reporters here on Tuesday, Chennai Port Trust Chairman Cyril C. George said the port can now handle container vesels with a capacity of around 8,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent unit), which was a major achievement.

He said that last fiscal, the port handled 50.06 million ton (MT) of cargo down from 52.54 MT cargo handled during 2014-15, but despite the reduction in cargo handling volume, it earned a higher net surplus by handling project cargo that generated better revenue.
