Mississauga, February 5 (CINEWS): At a conference for parents of elementary and secondary students in the Peel District School Board, math will be the main topic of discussion.
Registration is now open for this year’s event, entitled Numeracy and Beyond: Parent Conference 2016, taking place April 2 at Rick Hansen Secondary School.
Tony Pontes, education director, said in a release that parents will receive tips at the free event to help bolster their child’s academic success.
Jonathan So, a Grade 6 teacher at Brampton’s Ray Lawson Public School, will be giving a keynote address called “Moving from Doing Math to Helping Children Become Doers of Math.”
A writeup on the board’s website about the talk acknowledges the disconnect between
“old and new ways of doing mathematics,” noting that So aims to help parents “understand a balanced approach” to the subject while also explaining how educators are teaching math.
Now in its 15th year, the conference additionally offers 61 workshops to attendees.
Though nearly half of the workshops focus on math, Peel board staff delve into topics such as critical thinking, special education, studying, reading and making the leap to high school.
The event begins at 8 a.m. and wraps up around 2:30 p.m.
Visit to sign up and see a list of workshops.
Registration closes March 18.
