Congress defends Chandy, says ‘malicious’ allegations will continue

New Delhi, Jan. 28 (ANI): The Congress Party on Thursday came to the rescue of Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy amid growing chorus for his resignation over the solar scam and said that ‘mischievous and malicious’ allegations will continue to fly as it is election time in the state.

“Not a rupee of benefit was given by the Congress Party government in Kerala to any member of so called ‘Team Solar’. The Congress Party is of the opinion that there is no need for Kerala CM Oommen Chandy to resign at this stage,” Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala told the media here.

“Oommen Chandy will discuss issues with all coalition partners as also with his colleagues and leaders of the Congress Party. A detailed report will also be submitted to Congress Party leadership in this regard. In the solar scam, the Congress-led government had ordered a judicial commission. The CM submitted himself willingly to the commission,” he added.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) earlier demanded Chandy’s resignation for his alleged involvement in the solar scam.

“We demand that the Congress high command speak on this matter. We demand that the Chief Minister should resign,” Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman told ANI.

“It is a grave charge of corruption, one after the other, now at the doorstep of the Chief Minister himself,” she added.

A Thrissur vigilance court earlier ordered to register an FIR against Chandy and Power Minister Aryadan Muhammed based on the revelation made by Saritha S Nair that she had paid bribe to them.

The court acted upon a public interest petition filed by an activist in Thrissur. (ANI)
