Chennai, Sept. 7 (ANI): Female members of the Congress party wore ornaments made up of vegetables in a unique protest against rising food prices in Tamil Nadu on Monday.
The protesters raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government in Chennai and demanded that soaring prices of basic commodities be reduced.
The Congress women members wore garlands made of onions, carrots, radishes and bitter gourds during the protest.
Onion prices more than tripled over the course of the monsoon season, which started in June. Prices in India’s financial centre have reached around 65 to 80 rupees a kilogram, close to the around 100 rupees level seen in 2013.
The Congress Chief in Tamil Nadu, Vijay Dharani, said the initiative was taken as a protest against the federal government and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa-led AIADMK government’s non-action to control the price rise.
“We are here near the collectorate against the centre and the state government. This is regarding high rise of prices of all essential commodities, people are suffering due to this and this Tamil Nadu government has not taken any step towards this.” said Dharani. (ANI)
