Johannesburg, July 08 (ANI): South Africa captain AB de Villiers has been released from the squad for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Bangladesh in view of receiving one-match suspension during the World Cup semi-final in March.
The swashbuckling batsman was handed a one-match suspension for maintaining a slow over-rate during the World Cup semi-final against New Zealand. Hence, the ban will come into effect in the first one-day match on Friday in Mirpur.
It was De Villiers’ second minor over-rate offence in the same format within 12 months following the offence against Australia in Perth last year.
Coach Russell Domingo said that De Villiers’ presence and contributions would be missed but they have a hectic playing schedule this season and they felt this would be a great opportunity to develop the next tier of batters during this series, like we are doing with our bowlers.
Domingo added that they would also like to give De Villiers the peace of mind of being close to his wife with the imminent birth of his first born child.
In the absence of De Villiers, vice-captain Hashim Amla will take charge of the side for the series. (ANI)
