Toronto, April 22 (CINEWS): Screenwriter, director and producer Deepa Mehta will be honored for her services to the entertainment industry at the fifth annual TVO tribute gala, to be held on October 27th at Toronto’s Distillery District.
The gala celebrates individuals who demonstrate how learning has the power to change the world.
The Toronto-based Mehta will be recognized for her ground-breaking use of film to educate people about various social issues.
“(Mehta) is a visionary creative mind and TVO is proud to pay tribute to her many accomplishments in the milieu of film,” said TVO CEO Lisa de Wilde. “Her thought-provoking body of work has seen critical and box office success, but its legacy is in educating audiences on social issues and in sparking civic discourse around these themes. TVO shares this passion for the importance of dialogue and debate because they are critical to building an engaged citizenry.”
Mehta is an Oscar-nominated, celebrated transnational filmmaker whose award-winning body of work explores the human condition.
“I am very pleased to accept this honour from TVO,” said Mehta. “It’s both a passion and mission of mine to use my art form to share the stories and lives of people in a compelling way, and to engage audiences near and far in these stories. Like TVO, I believe that an understanding of what we and others experience as humans is important for a strong civil society.”
Among Mehta’s many widely-acclaimed films the ones which stand out are Elements Trilogy, consisting of the films Fire (1996), Earth (1998) and Water (2005).
