New Delhi, July 26 (IANS) Taking note of increasing rape and other crimes against women in the national capital, the Delhi government on Tuesday decided to initiate the process of illuminating over 7,400 dark spots identified in north and east Delhi.
“Installing street lights at identified dark spots across East Delhi and North Delhi Municipal Corporation area roads will begin as the Public Works Department has received the much-awaited no-objection certificates from both the local bodies,” an official statement said.
The illumination of dark spots will make the areas safer for locals, ensure women safety and also reduce the risk of accidents.
A detailed survey conducted by the Public Works Department (PWD) found 124 dark spots in the East Delhi Municipal Coporation area and around 7,304 in the North Delhi municipal area.
“The PWD will immediately commence work of lighting up these areas and will install around 82 poles in east Delhi and 3,686 poles in north Delhi areas. The department also plans to install 124 LED lights in east Delhi and around 7,304 LED lights in north Delhi to illuminate the dark spots,” the statement said.
The proposed drive is expected to be completed within three to four months in east Delhi and five to six months in north Delhi.
The PWD is yet to receive an NOC from the South Delhi Municipal Corporation for illuminating dark spots under its jurisdiction.
