Disturbance at youth custody centre quelled; 6 hurt

Halton Regional Police Service were called to the Syl Apps Youth Centre at 475 Iroquois Shore Rd in Oakville on June 4th 2016 at 2:00 pm to assist staff in controlling a disturbance involving a number of in custody youths.

Police were able to quickly restore order and ensure the safety of all the staff and inmates.

As a result of the disturbance 5 inmates and 1 youth worker were taken to hospital for treatment. The youth worker was treated and released for a minor injury, the five youths remain in hospital for treatment.

The 20 Division Criminal Investigation Bureau is investigating the incident and charges are pending.

The Syl Apps Youth Centre is a 120,000 square foot facility capable of housing 48 youths. The Centre provides treatment and counseling for both custodial and non-custodial residents. The Centre is a secure facility. – CINEWS
