DJB rejects pipe leakage caused Vishnu Garden building collapse

New Delhi, July 22 (ANI): The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) on Wednesday rejected all reports that said that leaking water pipes caused the collapse of a multi-storied unauthorised building in an unauthorised colony of S-Block, Vishnu Garden.

In a media release, the DJB rejected the South Delhi Municipal Corporation’s (SDMC’s) view outrightly.

The DJB presented the factual position as under:

S-Block, Vishnu Garden is an unauthorised regularized colony where the water and sewer network were laid about 35-40 years back.

Due to increase in population and consequent heavier discharge of waste water, it became necessary to replace the undersized sewer line of 250 mm diameter with 315 mm diameter pipe. The average depth of the sewer line is around 5-6 ft.

The request for road cutting was sent to SDMC on 20-08-2014 and the request was considered in the Co-ordination Committee meeting held on 02-09-2014 and justified Road Restoration (RR) Charges, were paid by Delhi Jal Board on 27.11.2014. After paying the RR Charges, the work was allowed to start by SDMC on 27-11-2014, which was completed on 27-01-2015 in all respects, including leveling, dressing etc. During this period the work was never stopped by SDMC nor was any case of water leakage reported.

After laying this sewer line, S-Block and NA Block of Vishnu Garden has benefited and the sewer line is working satisfactorily till date.

It is also worth mentioning here that the storm water system of this area is also not functional and most of the structures are too old to sustain the additional load of 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors which are being constructed by the owner of the buildings unauthorizedly, without considering the structural requirements/safety.

DJB sewer line work was completed more than six months back. Moreover, there was no leakage of water nor any overflow of sewer on account of Delhi Jal Board’s network even during the execution of the work and thereafter.

The Government has already ordered an inquiry in the matter, which will clarify the matter further.

The Delhi Jal Board said it is dedicated to providing efficient water and waste water services to all the citizens of Delhi with the utmost commitment to safety standards. (ANI)
