EC asks Bihar Govt. not to deploy state police during polls

New Delhi, Sept. 11 (ANI): The Election Commission on Friday has asked Nitish Kumar led-Bihar Government not to deploy state police at polling booths in the upcoming state assembly elections commencing from October 12.

The Commission has said that only central paramilitary forces will be deployed at booths during the polls.

Director General of Police P.K. Thakur said the state police will be deployed only in patrolling and other law and order related issues.

It is for the first time that the Bihar Police has been debarred from performing their duty at polling booths.

The Election Commission has instructed the state machinery to intensify patrolling in sensitive areas of the state, especially in the 47 constituencies spread in 29 districts that are Naxal affected.

Chief Election Commissioner Nasim Zaidi announced Wednesday that the Bihar Assembly elections will be held in five phases between October 12 and November 5 with the results scheduled to be announced on November 8. (ANI)
