London, Sept. 9 (ANI): Legendary footballer Sir Bobby Charlton congratulated Wayne Rooney after the England captain became the country’s all-time leading goal-scorer by scoring his 50th international goal.
The 29-year-old Manchester United striker surpassed Charlton’s 45-year-old record of 49 goals with a penalty strike during the 2-0 home win over Switzerland in a Euro 2016 qualifier on Tuesday.
Reflecting on Rooney’s milestone achievement, Charlton said that although he was disappointed to lose the record, he was happy that it has remained with the England captain, the Mirror reported.
Charlton added that Rooney would hold the record for a long time and would also go on to score for his club and country for a long time to come.
Meanwhile, an elated Rooney said that it was a great feeling and a dream come true to break the record before the age of 30. (ANI)
