Everything was easier before social media: Renee Zellweger

Renee Zellweger…She has blasted the current media obsession.

Renee Zellweger is certain she had an easier ride when she was cast as Bridget Jones because it happened before the age of social media.

The Texas native was cast as British singleton Bridget Jones in the 2001 romantic comedy Bridget Jones’s Diary and a number of people questioned why the role wasn’t given to a native Brit. However, Renee was able to remain largely unaware of the criticism because it was before a time when everybody shared their opinions online so she could go into the project without their thoughts weighing down on her.

“I was naive to it at the time,” she says when asked if her casting announcement would have been more difficult in the current climate. “I was not aware of that conversation, which is nice, by the way, because you never want to enter into things considering millions of opinions.

“I’m sure you’re right. I mean, everything was easier before social media pretty much, wasn’t it? I mean in terms of staying away from information that isn’t necessarily healthy for you to know,” she adds.

The 47-year-old has also recently blasted the current media obsession with her looks amid rumours she had undergone a plastic surgery procedure, which she denies. Renee blogged for The Huffington Post last week slamming the “exploitative” nature of tabloid journalism. The actress, who doesn’t have social media, had taken a six-year acting hiatus since 2010, which she says was “necessary”, and her first role to be released since her return will be Bridget Jones’s Baby, her third time playing the character.

She tells the magazine it seemed like an “obvious” decision to make her comeback with the role, which had been in talks about for years.

“A nice reunion with my friends and a character that I love and a town that I love? ‘OK!,’” she joked. “There had been conversations about it for a while. It wasn’t a sudden decision. It wasn’t a proposal that came one day and then prompted a decision to return to filming.”
