Melbourne, Dec 23 (ANI): Fans are fearing that the pain of being crowned Miss Universe 2015 only for 2 minutes could be pushing Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, towards a mental breakdown.
The 21-year-old’s Miss Universe dreams came true for a brief moment, when Steve Harvey, the pageant’s host, wrongly named her as the winner. But, soon, the crown was taken away from her and given to Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, News.com.au reported.
After the incident, fans took to the social media to cheer Gutierrez up, including Sofia Vergara, who tweeted that Gutierrez is “still the queen.”
Maria Isabel Nieto, Colombia’s consul general to New York said that she doesn’t think that Miss Colombia is very affected by all this, adding “I just think that when I was in my 20s and was in her situation, I would take a little while to recover.”
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos also said that Gutierrez is “still Miss Universe” in his eyes, adding “They put the crown on her head. The photos are there to prove it.”
Gutierrez’s tearful expression as Wurtzbach received the crown likely worsened her fans’ worries.
Breaking her silence on Harvey’s blunder, Miss Colombia said in a video, “Everything happens for a reason, so I’m happy. Thank you for voting for me.”
According to a source, Harvey’s now-infamous gaffe took place as he didn’t practice reading the winner’s name. Insiders also revealed that Harvey was spotted gambling and drinking just hours before the live-to-air pageant began.
Later, the 58-year-old American comedian apologised to both the women, writing: ‘I’d like to apologise wholeheartedly to Miss Colombia & Miss Philippines for my huge mistake. I feel terrible.’ (ANI)
