Farhan Akhtar does an Amitabh Bachchan!
Actor fondly referred to as the Big B for his physical stature and his massive contribution to Indian cinema, wrote to his two granddaughters – Navya Naveli and Aaradhya Bachchan, an open letter which went viral. The letter was inspired by the film Pink about sexual abuse in which the seasoned veteran played the character of a senior lawyer.
The letter, nevertheless, drew criticism for belittling the contribution of the matriachal wing to bring up children.
Now it is the turn of Farhan, who has written an open letter to his daughter, under a social campaign called #LetsTalkAboutRape spearheaded by a popular daily in India.
Farhan has two daughters with former wife and hairstylist Adhuna Akhtar.
Farhan starts like this:
How do I even start writing to you about sexual violence and rape? My instinct, any father’s instinct, is to protect and nurture, but it is an issue that we must confront and discuss. Let me start, dear child, by quoting from a poem I wrote after the brutal murder of a sprightly lawyer in my team in 2013. You were too young then, only 12, and all I wanted was to see you smile and feel brave and invincible, like you did. The attempted rape and murder was too dark a subject for me to bring up then. Now, you’re 16 and I can read the questions in your mind. Yes, the same questions that I find myself asking”.
The Lets Talk About Rape Campaign, which started yesterday, will have eight personalities talking over the topic. Apart from Farhan Akhtar, the campaign will also host politician Shashi Tharoor, journalist Barkha Dutt and the Chairman and Managing Director of Biocon, Kiran Mazumdar Shaw. – CINEWS
