Mohali, Mar 25 (ANI): James Faulkner grabbed a five-wicket haul as Australia on Friday defeated Pakistan by 21 runs in their penultimate league game of the World Twenty20 in Mohali and in the process eliminated Shahid Afridi’s team out of the tournament while keeping their semifinals hopes alive.

Chasing a daunting target of 194, Pakistan kept losing wickets at regular intervals and could only 172 for eight in their stipulated 20 overs despite a valiant counter-attack by Khalid Latif (46) and Shoaib Malik (40 not out).

For Australia, skipper Steve Smith smacked an unbeaten 61-run knock and shared key stands with Shane Watson (44 not out) and Glenn Maxwell (30) to help his side post a formidable target.

Australia will next face hosts India on Sunday with the winner joining New Zealand in the semi-final. (ANI)
