Financial, legal, electoral literacy important: Javadekar

New Delhi, Sep 8 (IANS) Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar said on Thursday that apart from essential literacy, sensibilities like financial, legal, and electoral literacy must be given due importance.

“We must consider important sensibilities like financial literacy, legal literacy, and electoral literacy. Through this, we can achieve empowerment,” an official statement quoted him as saying while addressing the 50th International Literacy Day celebrations here.

He called upon to dream for the mission – “Saakshar Bharat, Samarth Bharat” and said that we should work with a motto of “Padhe Bharat Badhe Bharat”.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) on the occasion of International Literacy Day launched the Global Alliance for Literacy, a new initiative to make all major stake-holders pull together to promote literacy as a foundation for lifelong learning.

“A foundation for human rights and dignity, literacy is vital for poverty eradication, for gender equality, for more inclusive and sustainable societies,” said UNESCO Director Shigeru Aoyagi.

“This alliance will mobilise investment and promote innovative initiatives, with a focus on gender and new information and communication technologies,” Aoyagi added.

“Literacy is a foundation to build a more sustainable future for all – this is UNESCO’s message,” he noted.
