Five Indo-Canadians arrested, charged in string of GTA robberies

Five young men of Indian descent have been arrested on robbery charges by investigators with the York Regional Police Hold-Up Unit, with the assistance of the Peel Regional Police Central Robbery Unit.

The charged persons are Sagar Sharma,19, City of Toronto, Tegh Singh, 22, City of Brampton, Charanjeet Singh Kler, 19, City of Vaughan, Gurtej Dhaliwal, 18, City of Brampton, Ajay Sharma, 19, City of Toronto. The arrests are related to seven robberies that occurred in York and Peel Regions.

During a four-month period that began on February 17, 2016, the suspects are believed to be responsible for the robberies that occurred in Brampton, Markham and Vaughan. In each of the robberies, the suspects entered either gas stations or convenience stores, some of them armed with guns, making demands for cash, cigarettes and lottery tickets. T he suspects were identified with the assistance of quality video surveillance.

On Friday, May 20, 2016, shortly after 4 a.m., officers arrested four of the suspects in their vehicle in front of a residence in the City of Toronto, after they were suspected of committing a convenience store robbery in Brampton. Located in the vehicle were a loaded .22 calibre handgun and a replica firearm. A fifth suspect turned himself into police on Monday, May 23, 2016.

The accused appeared at the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on May 24, 2016, for bail hearings. All of the accused are scheduled to appear next at the Ontario Court of Justice in Newmarket on June 3, 2016.
