Peshawar, Apr. 2 (ANI): At least five miners were killed and eight others trapped after a gas explosion took place inside a coalmine in Doli area of Pakistan’s Lower Orakzai Agency on Saturday.

Political administration said the explosion took place as methane gas was accumulated in the mine, reports Dawn.

Ambulances rushed to the spot to shift the dead and the injured to hospital.

While the rescue workers pulled out four mines, efforts to pull those trapped inside were still underway.

The workers hailed from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Shangla district.

More than 4, 000 coalmines are located in Orakzai tribal agency and over 3,000 labourers work in these mines.

While miners across the globe work in hazardous conditions, the case is Pakistan is no different. Mine safety in the region is very poor and several deaths are reported every year. (ANI)
