Foreign policy initiatives are now economic partnerships as well in the 21st century, says John Kerry

Washington, Sept.22 (ANI): U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Tuesday said foreign policy initiatives being taken in the 21st century were no longer restricted to diplomatic engagement, but have transcended and broadened to include economic partnerships as well.

In an opening statement made at the start of the India-United States Strategic and Commercial Dialogue (S and CD), Kerry said, “In today’s era, foreign policy is economic policy and economic policy is foreign policy.”

He further stated, “Our (United States) economic partnership with India is growing stronger with each passing day. On the security side, our collaboration with India is also growing. It will benefit both countries and its people. The United States is one of India’s largest defence suppliers.”

The Secretary of State also reiterated that both the United States and India believe in freedom and in safeguarding the rights of all.

On the issue of global warming and climate change, Kerry said, “The choices one makes in order to grow clean and green, does not mean that we have to make a choice between growth or environment.”

He said that both can go simultaneously.

Tuesday’s India-US Strategic and Commercial Dialogue will see delegations of both nations discussing areas of mutual interest and identify possible areas for collaboration.

The dialogue is seen as the most comprehensive mechanism for discussion and deliberation on the specifics of bilateral agenda of cooperation in different fields between India and the United States.

Apart from External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, the Indian delegation comprises of Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Commerce and Industry Nirmala Sitharaman and Power Minister Piyush Goyal, besides senior Indian Government officials.

The first meeting of the India-US Strategic Dialogue was held in Washington D C in June 2010 and was followed by successive rounds in New Delhi (July 2011, June 2013 and July 2014) and in Washington D C (June 2012).

The decision to elevate the India-US Strategic Dialogue into a Strategic and Commercial Dialogue was taken during the visit of U S President Barack Obama to India in January 2015. (ANI)
