Former CPI-M MP Noorul Huda is dead

Kolkata, Dec 17 (IANS) Noorul Huda, a former CPI-M MP from Assam, died here on Thursday, the party and his family said. He was 85.

Huda suffered a massive heart attack on Tuesday and slipped into coma. He had been admitted to the Ruby Hospital with bronchitis about a week back, family sources said.

A central committee member of the Communist Party of India-Marxist, Huda is survived by his wife Chobi. He was a leader of the All India Kisan Sabha.

A CPI-M statement said Huda joined the then undivided Communist Party of India in 1949 in Kolkata after giving up his job as an engineer. He shifted to Silchar in Assam in 1966, two years after the CPI-M was born.

Huda became a member of the Assam state committee of the CPI-M in 1970 and the State Secretariat in 1978. He was elected to the party’s Central Committee in 1985 and remained its member till 2012.

He was jailed a number of times, spending a total of two years and eight months in prison.

Huda was elected a MP in 1973 from Silchar and to the Assam assembly for one term.
