Giving immunity to a rape accused is regrettable, says Brinda Karat

New Delhi, Sept 17 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) polit bureau member Brinda Karat on Thursday said that the Saudi Arabian Embassy had played a very unfortunate role by giving immunity from arrest to its accused diplomat.

“I think the Saudi Arabian embassy here has played an extremely unfortunate role. It is highly regrettable. The government should have taken strong action,” Karat told ANI.

Karat further said that in such cases diplomatic immunity should not be used as a shield to protect the people accused of rape and that to on economic vulnerable women who were domestic help in their (diplomats) house.

Saudi diplomat Majed Hassan Ashoor, who was accused of confining and raping two Nepali women who worked as his domestic help, left India on Wednesday.

The Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations gives diplomats immunity from arrest, criminal prosecution and civil lawsuits in the countries where they are posted. (ANI)
