Mount Maunganui, Jan.7 (ANI): Brilliant half centuries from Martin Guptill and skipper Kane Williamson helped New Zealand claim a narrow three-run win over Sri Lanka in the first T20 here on Thursday.
Invited to bat first, the hosts posted a formidable target of 183 runs, thanks to some fierce hard-hitting from Williamson (53) and Guptill (58).
Sri Lanka, in reply, made a decent run-chase but were just unable to cross the line, falling short of three runs.
Opener Danushka Gunathilaka (46) and all-rounder Milinda Siriwardana (42) made significant contributions but failed to fetch a win for the visitors.
For the Kiwis, Matt Henry and Trent Boult bagged three wickets each while Grant Elliott and Ish Sodhi shared two wickets between themselves.
With the win, the hosts have taken an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series.
Both the sides will face each other in the final T20 in Auckland on Sunday. (ANI)
