Mumbai, April, 28 (CINEWS): There was high-voltage drama and noise in front of the famed Haji Ali Dargah in Mumbai on Thursday evening as Trupti Desai of the Bhumata Brigade tried to enter the shrine along with some 50 supporters
Police foiled her multiple attempts to march to the dargah.Supporters of parties like the Samajwadi Party, All-India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen, Awami Party and other Muslim organisations also gathered to foil her plan. Trupti and her followers then went on a sit-down strike on the main road leading to the shrine.
The dargah, built on rocks in the Arabian Sea off the Worli Coast, is approachable only by a narrow 1/2-kilometer sea bridge. Trupti’s new ‘Haji Ali For All\ movement has the support of several NGOs and other civic groups. However, opposition to her is strong and the hostile crowd shouted slogans against her asking her to stop ‘political stunts’ and leave the aerea. Police had to take her away to ensure her safety.
Later in the evening, the trustees of the dargah decided to shut the main gates two hours earlier than usual to avoid any untoward incidents.
“We have come peacefully, with no intentions to hurt the religious sentiments of anybody, but only to ensure that women are accorded equality to pray at all religious places,” Desai told the media.
She is also now targeting the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), which she said must allow women to become its members.
