Megalyn Echikunwoke and Utkarsh Ambudkar join ‘SNL’ alum Jay Pharaoh in the pilot, titled ‘White Famous.’
The half-hour project focuses on a talented, young African-American comedian named Floyd (Jay Pharaoh) whose star is rising, forcing him to navigate the treacherous waters of maintaining his credibility as he begins to cross over toward becoming “white famous.”
Echikunwoke will play the yet-to-be-named character of Floyd’s ex-girlfriend, the mother of his son and the love of his life. Her credits also include House of Lies, Arrow, Damien and The 4400. She is repped by UTA.
Utkarsh is starting to get recognized. The 29-year-old actor-musician was one of Pitch Perfect’s breakout stars. Next up he’s playing Mindy’s rapper brother on The Mindy Project — the role, he explains, he was born to play.
Talking to a magazine on the struggles of being a South Asian actor in Hollywood Utkarsh said: “I’m Indian. I’m first generation. I was born here, I was brought up by two Indians, I’m Hindu. I didn’t go to church, I didn’t go to synagogue, I went to temple, Hindu temple, where I prayed to my Hindu gods — whether or not I believe in it is another story”.
Utkarsh Ambudkar (born December 8, 1983, Baltimore, Maryland) is an American actor of Indian origin. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He is a former VJ for MTV Desi. He has appeared in the comedy film Pitch Perfect as the character Donald, and in the television shows The Mindy Project and The Muppets. He is set to star in the Fox series, Eat, Pray, Thug. Utkarsh originated the role of Aaron Burr in the developmental readings of Hamilton. – CINEWS
