London, July 08 (ANI): World number one and defending champion Rory McIlroy has confirmed that he will not be competing in the next week’s Open Championship after rupturing his ankle ligament while playing football with friends.
The 26-year-old golfer revealed on Instagram that he is taking a long-term view of this injury, adding that although rehab is progressing well, he wants to come back to tournament when he feels 100 percent healthy and competitive, the BBC reported.
McIlroy, the four-time major champion, has had a mixed so far as he finished fourth at the Masters in April, and joint ninth at last month’s US Open. He, however, bagged the World Golf Championships Match Play and the Wells Fargo Championship in May. (ANI)
