Johannesburg, Jan.5 (ANI): World number three Maria Sharapova has pulled out of the season’s opening Brisbane International tournament due to a left arm injury.
The 28-year-old five-time Grand Slam winner, who got hurt during the practice session, said that she needed to withdraw as a precaution ahead of the Australian Open.
Reflecting on her withdrawal, Sharapova said that the Brisbane International was a really special event for her, adding that she was looking forward to play the tournament next year, Sport24 reported.
Sharapova was set to lock horns with Ekaterina Makarova, who will now face lucky loser.
Sharapova, who won the Brisbane International last January and was runner-up at the Australian, missed three months of tournaments due to leg injury after Wimbledon semi-final loss to Serena Williams in early July.(ANI)
