Is 2016 going to be the Year of Biharis?
Films Aligarh and Nil Batey Sannata were highly acclaimed movies in 2016 and and the common element of these two movies was the lead actors are from Bihar. It is not a secret that the artistes’ passion alone won’t allow them to do well in Bollywood. The journey is not an uphill task for some who have Bollywood links in their genes. But for others, as Esha Gupta has mentioned, it is tough even with sheer determination and hard work. So is the missing element one’s luck?
Some Bihari actors have made their way into Bollywood the hard way without any support. Sushant Singh Rajput is a case in point. After he became famous with the popular TV serial Pavitra Rishta, Sushant won many dance reality shows before making a sensational debut on big screen with Kai Po Che in 2013. Though Sushant is hardly seen in filmy parties and award shows, he has an ardent fan following. The boy from Patna was fantastic in Detective Byomkesh Bakshy and has already created a buzz with the trailer of his upcoming biopic on Indian cricket captain, MS Dhoni: The Untold Story.
Another Bihari is Manoj Bajpayee who got rejected by the National School of Drama and made his presence felt in movies like Satya, Shool and Rajneeti, He topped his career with two National Awards and two Filmfare Awards. Like Sushant, Bajpayee too cut his teeth on the TV.
Swara Bhaskar who was born to a Bihari mother got her Filmfare nominations for Tanu Weds Manu and Raanjhanaa. Swara has worked with big names in the industry and is currently hosting Doordarshan’s popular show Rangoli.
Another Bihari is Pankaj Tripathi who became famous as Sultan Qureshi of Gangs of Wasseypur. He was born in a village in Bihar’s Gopalganj where people do not have televisions. The nearest cinema hall is said to be 25 kilometres away from his home. He was last seen as a teacher in Nil Battey Sannata and Shah Rukh’s associate in Dilwale.
Narendra Jha who is from Madhubani is popular for playing Shahid Kapoor’s father in Haider. Since then he has been part of many films, including Ghayal Once Again, Shorgul and Mohenjo Daro. His next film, Iqbal My Father, is all set for release.
The elder statesman of Bollywood, Shatrughan Sinha is the other Bihari who ruled the industry few years ago. He is the first Bihari to be at the top. His professional rivalry with superstar Amitabh Bachchan was quite famous and it was said Sinha almost outshone Bachchan in films they did together like Kala Patthar, Shaan, Naseeb and Dostana. Popular Bollywood actress Sonakshi Sinha is his daughter. – CINEWS
