Actor Jahangir Khan, is making a comeback to the small screen after eight years.
He will be seen in popular TV show Ek Maa Jo Laakhon Ke Liye Bani Amma.
Jahangir, who has appeared in films like Aashiqui, Paan Singh Tomar, Rajneeti, Sadak and Sankat City, will be seen as Pathan Sher Khan, who comes to Mumbai to join hands with Amma.
He plays a controversial character of a man who brings arms and ammunition to India and spread terrorism in the name of religion.
Amma played by Shabana Azmi does not want people to get divided by religion and fight against him.
“I’m excited to be back on television after eight years. I kept on getting a lot of offers for television, but I was waiting for a strong character and a unique storyline. And, when I was narrated the role of Pathan, I agreed instantly,” Jahangir said in a statement.
“The best thing about the show is that it is a weekend show and I don’t have to shoot for it every day. Additionally, it is a finite series and is shot on a film format with high production values,” he added.
The weekend TV series is loosely inspired from the life and times of Mumbai’s yesteryear female don, Jenabai Daruwali. A bootlegger, she was among the first few women in early ’70s to be associated with underworld names like Haji Mastan, Vardharajan Mudaliar, Karim Lala and Dawood Ibrahim, who addressed her as maasi.
Says Azmi about the character, “The comparison with Godmother (She played an underworld don in The Godmother 17 years ago) is inevitable, but the two characters are distinct. Vinay Shukla’s Rambiben in Godmother for which I bagged a National Award had a political trajectory whereas Zeenatbi in Amma is more of a Robin Hood character; some think of her as a hero, some as a villain. She is illiterate, but street-smart and cunning.” – CINEWS
