New Delhi, Feb. 21 (ANI): The family members of Jawaharlal Nehru University students’ union president Kanhaiya Kumar, who is presently in police custody, today demanded protection for him while stating that there is a threat to his life.

“He wanted to be a professor. We think there is a threat to his life. He should be given protection. We won’t stop him from achieving his goal. I praise his capability. We will be here till the court’s verdict,” said Kanhaiya’s grandfather.

He alleged there is a conspiracy behind Kanhaiya being in jail as he speaks against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Kanhaiya’s brother claimed that their family has always been a Left supporter.

“After coming to JNU, he became more matured. From the very beginning, our family has been supporting the Left. So, somewhere he is a supporter of the Left. I have full faith that he won’t do anything wrong. He is going on the right path,” he said.

Echoing similar sentiments, one of Kanhaiya’s kin stated that they fear danger to his life as he belongs to a poor family.

“We fear his life is in danger because he belongs to a poor family. If he would have belonged to a rich family then such allegations would not have been levelled against him. This is the reason why Bihar’s Chandra Sekhar, who was in JNU, was murdered. After the Patiala incident, we are sure that his life is in danger,” he said.

Kanhaiya had moved the Supreme Court for bail earlier this week, claiming threat to his life.

Kanhaiya, who has been booked under sedition charges in connection with an event in the JNU campus, has been remanded to judicial custody till March 2. (ANI)
