Kiwis thrash Sri Lanka by 122 runs to win first Test

London, Dec.14 (ANI): New Zealand have secured an unassailable 1-0 lead in the two-match series after comprehensively defeating Sri Lanka by 122 runs on the fifth day of the first Test in Dunedin on Monday.

Chasing a daunting target of 405, the tourists were bundled out for 282 in their second innings, thanks to paceman Trent Boult’s two quick scalps after lunch, the Guardian reported.

Resuming at their overnight score of 109-3, Dinesh Chandimal (58) and skipper Angelo Mathews (25) looked comfortable on the benign pitch before both were dismissed in quick succession.

Subsequently, Kithuruwan Vithanage made a run-a-ball 38 before he was trapped lbw by pace spearhead Tim Southee, who was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts, bagging 3-52.

Opener Martin Guptill was adjudged as the Man of the Match for making a brilliant 156 in the first innings and a second-innings 46.

The second match will start at Seddon Park in Hamilton on 18 December. (ANI)
