Adelaide, Jan. 26 (ANI): Star batsman Virat Kohli smashed a scintillating 90 not out and then spinners produced disciplined bowling performances as India claimed a 37-run win over Australia in the opening T20 international at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday.
Put in to bat first, India posted 188 for three in their stipulated 20 overs. Opener Rohit Sharma provided the initial thrust with 21-ball 31 before Kohli wreaked havoc on the hosts.
Kohli received able support from captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (11 not out) and Suresh Raina (41), who became the second Indian batsman after Kohli to complete his 1000 runs in T20.
In reply, Australia got off to a thunderous start before they stifled in their chase and were eventually bundled out for 151 within 19.3 overs.
Captain Aaron Finch was the top scorer for the hosts with 44, while Steven Smith made 21 off 14 balls.
For India, debutant bowler Jasprit Bumrah made an impressive start to his T20 career by claiming three wickets, while spin duo of Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared four wickets apiece.
Meanwhile, debutant all-rounder Hardik Pandeya bagged two wickets in his kitty despite making an expensive start. Veteran fast bowler Ashish Nehra, who made his return to the national squad after making his last international appearance in the semifinals of the 2011 World Cup, also took one wicket.
With the win, India have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and will next take on Australia on Friday. (ANI)
